Savage Harbour Wharf Reconstruction
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The wharf pier (Structures #402/403/404) at Savage Harbour Small Craft Harbour (SCH) is a timber pile structure with a timber sheathing closed face and asphalt deck that is deteriorating in condition. In order to address this, SCH is proposing to re-construct structures #402/403/404 into a Steel Sheet Pile (SSP) structure. The existing structure will remain in place, with the new SSP being driven directly adjacent to the timber sheathing face of the existing wharf. The top of the new SSP will be approximately 1.5m higher than the current elevation of the wharf, which will allow for the SSP to be tied back (secured) over top of the current structure with minimal disturbance. The SSP will be driven into place by a crane working from the wharf. The space between the newly driven SSP and the current wharf face will be back filled with rock fill, as will the additional 1.5m between the top of the current structure and the concrete deck of the new structure. There is no excavation anticipated with the project and any construction demolition material (ie. existing timbers, wheel guards) will be disposed of at a provincially approved location. Once all SSP is driven and secured, and the footprint is backfilled with rock fill, the concrete deck will be poured and the wharf components (ie. wheel guards, ladders, electrical, etc.) will be installed.
