Establishment of Seasonal Travel Corridor
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The existing main road from the South beach from the Sable Island Main Station traverses an active tern colony (May – August). Vehicle movements along this corridor creates disturbance to nesting birds, and can contribute to nest failure and chick mortality. To reduce these impacts, it is proposed that a seasonal, temporary crossing be developed to allow access to the south beach from Main Station. The proposed location is located approximately 1.8 km east of Main Station and passes through one of the narrowest sections of the dunes (~ 100m long) and is currently almost devoid of vegetation and easily navigable by SINPR vehicles. The project will be assessed with a basic impact assessment.
