Refit and rehabilitation of the Lachine Canal workshops

The project involves refurbishing and upgrading Building #1 and repairing the foundations of Building #2 of the Lachine Canal workshop complex.


The work will include architectural, structural, electrical and plumbing interventions, as well as changes to the building's ventilation and fire protection systems.


The project includes the following activities on Building #1:

- Replacing the heating system (will involve the removal of a fuel storage tank);

- Repairing the floor;

- Refitting the interior;

- Rehabilitating the electrical systems;

- Rehabilitating the drainage system;

- Replacing the ground-floor slab in the main workshop, which will include disposing of the contaminated materials under this slab and managing fumes;

- Improving the main workshop envelope's energy efficiency;

- Sealing the foundations;

- Configuring the new plumbing equipment;

- Upgrading the fire detection and protection system;

- Repairing the electrical infrastructure, lighting and distribution throughout the site.


The project includes the following activity on Building #2:

- Repairing the foundations.


Latest update

26 december 2019 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Parks Canada is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
