Introduction to Strategic Environmental Assessment
Goal |
This course provides participants with a good overview of the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals (the Cabinet Directive) and its requirements in regard to strategic environmental assessment (SEA). It also offers guidance on putting SEA into practice and provides a basic introduction to SEA at the federal level. |
Ideal Participants |
- policy Analysts and Officers in the federal government;
- cabinet Liaison Officers; and
- federal public servants involved in planning, managing, conducting, reviewing or participating in SEAs carried under the Cabinet Directive.

Outcomes and Benefits |
This course will:
- provide an overview of the history and the requirements of the Cabinet Directive;
- enhance understanding of the roles and responsibilities that federal departments and agencies have under the Cabinet Directive in regard to SEA;
- offer guidelines on how to do SEAs and define the different steps involved in the SEA process;
- provide information on how the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency can provide further support.

Participants will have the opportunity to:
- familiarize themselves with the Cabinet Directive, learn about SEA practice and participate in a case study;
- interact with key players in the other departments and agencies, and share knowledge on different internal processes put in place.
